My Journey at TASS at 74

I have been attending TASS as part of their geriatric training programme, and at 74, I can honestly say that joining TASS has been one of the best things I have done for myself. Since starting, I have noticed a real difference. My walking and balance have improved, I am stronger, feel less stiff and have more energy. I also feel more confident about staying active and looking after my health. As a Muslim woman who wears hijab, I particularly appreciate how respectful and accommodating TASS is. I can exercise comfortably in my hijab and, when needed, I am sometimes able to use the physio room for greater privacy. My trainer, Amanda, deserves a special mention. She is soft-spoken, friendly and approachable, but also firm when necessary. She knows how to encourage and challenge me without making me feel pressured. What I love most about TASS is the people. Everyone who comes there to exercise feels like family. There is such a warm, friendly and supportive atmosphere, and you never feel that you are too old to be there. There are a few things I would love to see in the future: a ladies-only swimming pool with a female coach; more ladies and girls encouraged to join; affordable programmes, particularly for seniors and families; healthier food and sugar-free/low-sugar drinks; and a separate shower area for ladies. I understand that maintaining equipment and facilities is costly, but keeping services as affordable as possible would make TASS accessible to even more people. Overall, I am very grateful for my experience at TASS. At 74, I would encourage other older adults to give exercise a try. It is never too late to become stronger, healthier and more active.
